LC/NA is a 35-year-old North American organization that is seeking its first full-time Development Director. For most of its history LC/NA was led by an all volunteer working board of directors. LC/NA currently has a full-time staff of five, led by an Executive Director. We are looking for a successful and experienced person who is passionate about creating genuine welcome and full participation for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities within the Lutheran communion. This new Exempt position will report to LC/NA's Executive Director, Emily Eastwood. Pay Range: $40,000–$47,000 depending on qualifications, plus benefits. (Salary and benefits for all staff will grow with success in this position.) Ideally, the Development Director will work out of the Saint Paul office and spend 50–67% of their time traveling, and 33–50% in the office.

BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF JOB

In consultation with the Executive Director, the Development Director will assume primary responsibility for the day-to-day activities needed to secure financial stability, both short- and long-term, for LC/NA, to increase the reach and visibility of LC/NA, to ensure implementation and accomplishment of our objectives for systemic change within the Lutheran communion toward full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Since the year 2000, the LC/NA budget has grown more than ten fold. LC/NA's vision for the organization, its staff and its mission includes doubling the current budgeted annual income within five years (all sources: major donors, grants, pledges, special appeals, endowment, planned giving, and membership, etc.), by June 30, 2012. The purpose for this increase is expanding the reach, visibility and effectiveness of LC/NA to create the change we seek.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop long and short-term fund-raising plans and activities, including:
    • Direct written appeals.
    • Develop and implement a Planned Giving Program.
    • Develop an Annual Fund and a Regular Giving program (annual/quarterly/monthly).
    • Research and write grants for specific programs or activities of LC/NA.
    • Develop corporate sponsors for major LC/NA events.
    • Grow the LC/NA Endowment Fund.
  • Cultivate, acquire, retain and upgrade major donors by building relationships.
  • Travel 50–67% of time throughout North America, to regularly meet with and present to prospective and existing donors, one-to-ones and groups.
  • Ensure that agreed upon contribution goals for the biennium are met.
  • Communicate goals/results accurately, via reports to Executive Director, board and membership.
  • Develop and maintain donor notes in the database.
  • Prepare presentations (i.e. PowerPoint) for consistency of message in group presentations and one-to-ones, and present them throughout North America.
  • Create and author Development News for donor and member communication, on the web, in the Concord magazine.
  • Stay in homes of LC/NA members and supporters when traveling, whenever possible, to build relationships and minimize costs.
  • Plan travel carefully to minimize cost and maximize return on investment
  • Establish a "team" of talented and committed volunteers to assist and support the effort
  • Gain cooperation through discussion, conversation and persuasion, in presentations, in-person visits, public addresses, telephone calls and e-mail.
  • Establish professional relationships that are appropriately personal, and to recognize faces, names and voices of major donors.
  • Respect confidentiality and exercise good judgment
  • Operate in a highly ethical manner, with proper boundaries, in compliance with LC/NA policies.
  • Be creative in developing other potential sources of income.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions and project consequences of proposed actions, then implement agreed on recommendations in support of goals.
  • Be dependable in making and keeping appointments
  • Work in close collaboration with staff, volunteers, Board members and Regional Coordinators

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated successful experience in development, preferably non-profit
  • Bachelor's degree with certifications and/or coursework in development preferred
  • Lutheran preferred, or familiarity and comfort with Lutheran context
  • Knowledge of and passionate commitment for the vision and mission of LC/NA
  • Experience and/or training in faith-based community organizing preferred
  • Provide own car, have valid driver's license, good driving record, dependable vehicle & insurance
  • Excellent demonstrated communication and persuasion skills
  • Skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, databases and Internet Explorer
  • English required, Spanish helpful

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

  1. Primary performance measure will be results in meeting established income goals.
    • Additional measures will be based on success in the listed Essential Functions
